Warning of Pedestrian Presence in the Toyota RAV4

Toyota did not halt technological safety advances with Lane Alerts or by advancing technology in Cruise Control. With the reduction of traffic accidents that came with such technological advances, Toyota engineers put their minds to work on the issue of pedestrian safety. If a system can detect a slow-moving car, then it should be able to detect a pedestrian.

With the insertion of the Dual Radar System, the engineers realized that the same system could detect unseen pedestrian traffic. Utilizing the same camera and radar unit they used for the Cruise Control system, they included a program called the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. When the system detects pedestrian traffic, it alerts the driver and then applies the brakes if the driver does not act. The system activates the Brake Assist system to augment the driver’s action.
